Firstly, Dawn and I would like to thank those members who supported us on our recent Captains’ Day and offer our congratulations to all of the prize winners. In spite of the number of members attending the event being much lower than in previous years, particularly for the evening, the fantastic amount of £608 was raised for our Prostate Cancer charity. Many thanks to those members, family and friends who contributed.
We have recently had a number of events at the club, including a very successful DGU County Captain’s Day, whereby members from other clubs have visited the course and it has been very pleasing to hear the many compliments regarding how the club and particularly the course have progressed.
As I have mentioned in a previous newsletter, our Charity Day will take place on Sunday 13th October, with all proceeds from the day going towards the Wrexham Prostate Cancer Support Group. The Support Group proudly provide support primarily for those who have been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer or are on the journey to recovery following treatment. The invitations have since been widened to partners and their families. What is discussed remains totally confidential but it is held in a low key environment and stories and anecdotes are shared with empathy and humour. Rest assured the warmest of welcomes is provided for those who choose to join the group. Clays member Malcolm Williams is Chair of the group.
The format of the Charity Day will be teams of four players with best 2 scores to count. The cost of entering a team is £100 and this will include an eighteen hole Stableford team competition, an excellent 2-course carvery meal provided by Hayley and a range of prizes including, in addition to team prizes, individual prizes for Drives, Nearest the Pin and Nearest the Pin in 2. Please note that the competition is open to both men and ladies with competitive handicaps. We are hoping to have over 120 players on the day filling all 30+ tee times.
We are keen to raise as much money for Prostate Cancer as possible and we are hoping to attract sponsors for each of the various aspects of the day – the overall event, each of the 18 golf holes, team and individual prizes and for the Event Programme, which everyone will receive at registration. As an example, the cost of sponsoring an individual hole is £50. This will enable the sponsor to place a banner/sign on each tee and to have a mention in the event programme. I am delighted to say that we have already received interest from sponsors for 13 of the holes. In addition to sponsorship, we would be very grateful to receive any other support leading up to, or on, the day, including administrative support etc.
If any member/company would like to sponsor a part of this very worthwhile charity event could you please contact me at [email protected] in order to confirm your interest/participation.
We have recently received a number of the Prostate Cancer badges to sell on to members. These can be purchased in Reception for a minimum £2 contribution per badge.
The Ladies Section have decided to adopt their own Guide Dog puppy “Monty”, whose photograph and details you will see posted at the club.
Finally, please note that the 2-Day Club Championship will be held over this coming weekend, 27th & 28th.
Have a good month’s golf.

Congratulations to the Clays Ping Mixed Team (Don Wraight, Christine Evans, Dawn Thompson Byrne, Dave Riley, Jane Evans and Graham Davidson Clarke) who beat St Giles GC at Royal St David’s Harlech in a thriller that went to the last putt on the last green to win 2-1. They are now into the last eight where they will play v Dinas Powis GC at Builth Wells on 3rd August. Best wishes to the team for the match.

Dave Palferman, our Vice Captain, reports that Clays have 3 pairs in this year’s Jubilee Plate Quarter Final draw. Congratulations and best wishes for the next round to all. With regard to next year’s competition, instead of running a local qualifier competition, entry to the 2020 Jubilee Plate will be open to all Clays members who have paid their DGU Levy.
The Clays DGU Team won 4½ – 3½ at home against Wrexham on Sunday 30 June and will next play Llangollen at home on Sunday 4th August.
