Captains Newsletter: July

Thanks to all those who participated in the Captain’s Drive-In competition this year. Although the weather was typical of the British summer, namely very wet, Lady Captain, Christine, and I enjoyed the day. The competition was won by Andi Jones with a stableford score of 44 points, well done. Pictures of the day have been posted on our clubs Facebook page.

One of the joys, I think that’s the right word, of being your Captain is to receive feedback on members concerns. Unfortunately, the majority of this feedback is negative. This has proved to be the case this month. I have received a number of messages in respect to members showing a disregard for established golf etiquette. I appreciate there are a lot of members who are new to golf and may not be fully conversant with golf etiquette. There are also members, who quite honestly should know better, who seem to have forgotten some of the basics of golf etiquette. For the benefit of all members, can I draw your attention to some of the basics of golf etiquette:
• Keep golf trollies and buggies off tees, including Ladies tees, and greens,
• Replace divots on fairways and repair pitch marks on greens,
• Give greenkeepers priority on the course at all times, and
• You are responsible for your own safety and that of others while on the course.

A reminder from our competition secretary, Paul Lloyd, in respect to the knockout competitions. The draw for each round of the knockout competitions can be found on How-Did-I-Do (HDID) under the “Knockout” tab accessed via the “More” tab on the top menu bar. The winner of each match should notify Paul of the result as soon as possible via email: [email protected]

While talking of competitions, can I add my personal congratulations to the winners of the recent board competitions. Despite the course playing long, due to the wetter than normal July weather, there have been some very impressive scores. The role of honour includes: Peter Taylor-Senior Trophy, Andrew Mitchell-Vets Trophy, Tony Jackson- Senior Champion (Div1), Ken Tieszen-Senior Champion (Div2), Jane Evans-Ladies Champion, Daniel Goodall-Rowland Cup, and last but not least, no pun intended, Iwan Bonds-Club Champion. I sincerely hope I have not missed anyone, if so, sorry! I look forward to presenting you all with your respective trophies on presentation day/evening. Full results of all competitions can be found on HDID.

There are honours board or medal competitions each Saturday for the next six weeks. These competitions are FREE to enter, all are qualifying competitions. Entering will allow you to accumulate qualifying scores required to ensure an accurate handicap when the World Handicap System is introduced in November 2020. In addition, HDID now allows you to ‘sign in’ and enter a supplementary score. You can still enter a supplementary score as described in the ‘members section’ of our club website.

Finally, as we head towards the new normal, we can look forward to the opening of club house facilities. Also, the Senior section are re-starting kitty competitions from 11 August. The Senior Committee have issued guidance on the entry procedure, available on the ‘seniors blog’. Well done to all involved and wishing you a great success.

Until next time, enjoy your golf and stay safe.
